What do we mean by "motorcycle feeling on snow"?

One of the original ideas behind Alpsla was very simple:

We did not want to build a small snowmobile.

We wanted to recreate part of the feeling that makes riding a motorcycle special.

On a motorcycle, the rider is not simply sitting on a vehicle and steering it. Your body is part of the dynamics. You lean into turns. You shift your weight. You feel what the machine is doing underneath you.

That physical connection is a large part of why people love motorcycles.

Bringing that feeling to snow

Snow requires a completely different vehicle architecture.

Instead of two tyres contacting asphalt, Alpsla uses a front ski and a rear track.

The interaction between rider, ski, track and snow is therefore different from a motorcycle.

But the design goal remains similar:

make the rider part of the movement of the machine.

The narrow layout, riding position and steering behaviour are intended to create an active riding experience rather than the feeling of simply sitting on a small vehicle.

But snow is not asphalt

We are not claiming that Alpsla handles exactly like a motorcycle. It cannot — and it should not.

Snow changes constantly.

Fresh powder behaves differently from compacted snow. Wet spring snow behaves differently from cold dry snow. A groomed trail behaves differently from 15 centimetres of fresh snow over a hard base.

The ski-and-track layout provides a different kind of stability from a conventional two-wheel motorcycle while still allowing the rider to actively influence the machine.

Our goal is therefore not to copy a motorcycle mechanically. It is to preserve something more important:

the feeling of being connected to the machine.
